SACCOs
SACCO Management Software: A Uganda Buyer’s Checklist
The questions to ask before moving member, loan and repayment operations into a new SACCO management system.
Map products and controls first
A product demonstration can look complete while missing rules that matter to your SACCO. Document share products, savings, loan types, guarantor rules, approval levels, penalties, interest treatment and accounting handoffs before evaluating fit.
Test complete member and loan journeys
Ask vendors to demonstrate realistic journeys from onboarding through a loan application, approval, disbursement, repayment, arrears and closure. Include changes, reversals and exceptions—not only the ideal path.
- Member identity, contacts, next of kin and documents
- Loan appraisal, guarantors, approvals and schedules
- Cash, bank and mobile money collections
- Arrears, rescheduling, write-offs and audit history
Inspect access and audit controls
The system should separate duties, record important actions and make corrections traceable. Ask how permissions are assigned, how maker-checker approval works and whether reports reveal manual adjustments and reversals.
Plan migration and ongoing ownership
Agree how existing member, balance and loan data will be cleaned, tested and signed off. Clarify data export, backups, support response, change requests, training and what happens if the organisation later changes provider.
The strongest choice is the system the team can operate confidently and reconcile consistently after implementation—not the one with the longest feature list.
